Summer Time Learning – Avoid the Summer Slide! Free Infographic, too.

July 10, 2017

As summer approached, I struggled to find a balance between summer time fun and summer time learning.  I wanted my 3 little girls to enjoy their summer break, but wanted to ensure that we, as parents, did not allow our children to fall into the ‘the summer slide’ or ‘summer learning loss.’  According to Little Scholars, “learning loss is inevitable when kids take the summer off from educational activities” with students losing as much as 15% of their educational ability if they don’t read, write or practice math and possibly up to three months of academic progress over the summer.

So, just like me, you may be wondering…what can I do to make sure my child(ren) do not “slide” academically over the summer months?  Well, our friends of F.C. Kerbeck Buick GMC provided an amazing infographic with tips for summer educational fun!

August 2, 2016

Farms are a great place to nurture little growing minds though hands-on activities!

In recent years, farms have expanded their offerings to attract families with little kids. From hay rides to petting zoos, farms provide enough variety of activities to keep your family there the entire day. The same is true of the local farms in South Jersey! So, I decided to take the twins on an exploratory day at Johnson’s Corner Farm in Medford, NJ after hearing so many other moms in the area give them praise.
Here are 5 educational activities you can do or explore on Johnson’s Corner Farm:

Sun Safety for Kids – 5 Ways to Reduce Risk

Sun Safety for Kids – 5 Ways to Reduce Risk

One of the main reasons why adults are diagnosed with skin cancer is because they were exposed to too much sun, especially when they were young (resource: www.aad.org).  According to American Association of Dermatology, approximately 40-60% of sun exposure occurs before the age of 20.  As parents, we must do everything that we can do to protect our children’s skin NOW, to decrease their risk of getting skin cancer later on as adults.

Engaging Children in STEM Learning EARLY!

April 22, 2016

Although the majority of my girls’ time is filled with play and active engagement, they are constantly observing, investigating and discovering the world around them.  As all parents know, young children generate a crap load of questions which fuels their motivation to find answers.  From being naturally inquisitive to developing sophisticated reasoning as they grow, these are all the fundamentals of STEM skills.  STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  Once described as a field of study that helped immigrants get visas, STEM has expanded to being a curriculum or “the way of educating” for teachers throughout the globe.

So let’s engage our children in STEM early!

Earth Day is April 22, 2016!

Last Monday, my oldest daughter came home with a notice that her school will be focusing and celebrating Earth Day and, of course, asked many questions.  Like any typical 5 year old, she wanted to know what is Earth Day and why will she be celebrating it at school for the week.  I explained that Earth Day was a day to take time and acknowledge the importance of taking care of the Earth we live on.  She really understood Earth Day better when I told her we were wishing the Earth Happy Birthday! and just like we take time out on her birthday to do cool things, we will also do that to the Earth.  Of course, I reminded her that we should take care of the Earth every day, but Friday will be a day to celebrate keeping our Earth green and clean.
